Art Deco Figure Signed ‘Derenne’

1920 - 1940
Description

Dancer with discs/cymbals. Spelter on a marble base.?Signed DERENNE. Made in the workshop of Max Le Verrier in the 1920s.

Derrene is one of the pseudonyms used by the French sculptor Marcel-André BOURAINE (1886-1948)

Mainly self taught, he did study for a time with Alexander Falguieré. He exhibited his work of arts at the Salon des Tuileries in 1922.

From 1928, he was commissioned by Gabriel Argy- Rousseau (famous ceramicist, expert of the art of glass), who ordered a few sculptures.

For the International Exhibition of Arts in 1937, Paris, he created a large sculpture for the Sevres pavilion.

He became one of the most important sculptors of Art Deco. The city of Paris purchased a terracotta bust by him.

Best known for his bronze figures he also worked in chryselephantine and ceramic, excelling in his depiction of athletic nude women.
