Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A footman is a free-standing metal trivet designed to sit on the hearth in front of an open grate to keep teapots, kettles, and dishes warm. Originating in the 18th century, these pieces became standard features of British hearthside dining and tea preparation.

Footmen were traditionally constructed with cast or sheet brass tops and aprons, supported by cabriole front legs and iron rear legs to withstand high heat. Decorative elements were achieved through sand casting, piercing, turned finials, and hand-chased motifs.

Authentic period footmen display hand-wrought iron support frames on the underside, irregularity in hand-cut piercings, and heavy cast brass cabriole legs. Look for signs of authentic wear on the rear iron legs, hand-cut screw threads, and unevenness typical of period casting.

An antique footman can be placed directly on a fireplace hearth to add architectural height and reflective metallic warmth. It can also function as a low side table, plant stand, or decorative platform for displaying ceramics near a fireside.

To preserve the metal, dust regularly with a soft cloth and avoid abrasive chemicals that remove historic surface patina. Mild brass polish can be applied sparingly to the front facade if a bright finish is desired, while the iron rear legs should be kept dry and treated with microcrystalline wax to prevent oxidation.
