He was the son of the society painter Maurice Codner, whose friend Sir Alfred Munnings encouraged John Codner to paint. He was educated at St. Edward's School, Oxford.

Having entered the Second World War serving in the Royal Artillery, Codner was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1940 and served as a camouflage officer in the Middle East.

This group, serving under the Director of Camouflage, Geoffrey Barkas, GHQ.ME G(Cam), became renowned for the techniques they employed as part of the war of deception.

Codner worked on camouflage and deception with Peter Proud during the Siege of Tobruk, 1941,[5] and under Steven Sykes on Operation Crusader.

He studied at Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art under Harry Watson 1930-32. After the war Codner studied in London, at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art. He then taught at the Sir John Cass School of Art, from 1947 to 1951.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Judicial portraiture emerged as a key genre in British art to commemorate legal officials, capturing ceremonial attire such as wigs and court robes to symbolise institutional authority.

Artists typically used oil pigments on stretched linen or canvas, which were then mounted into carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf or gilt paint.

Authentic paintings display natural surface craquelure, period-appropriate canvas weave, subtle impasto technique, and artist signatures near the bottom margin.

Hang the painting as a focal point in a home office, library, or hallway to create rich visual contrast against contemporary wall colours or timber panelling.

Store or hang the artwork away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources, dusting the surface gently with a dry soft-bristled brush.
