Imperial Bushel Measure for County of Somerset

19th century
Description

A superb and rare early/mid Victorian solid bronze IMPERIAL BUSHEL MEASURE for the County of Somerset. This heavy measure features twin cast bronze and turned lignum vitae wood handles and is beautifully hand-engraved with the manufacturers: Bate of London ~ maker of the Exchequer Standards. The upper rim is impressed with Customs & Excise stamps and “V.R” proof marks. 19ins diameter; 27ins across the handles; 9ins high.

There are many uses for this handsome measure: perhaps as an impressive planter or a wine cooler. Indeed the last one of these we stocked was sold to the owner of a wine bar to hold ice and open bottles of white or rosé wine.

** These measures (they range from the Bushel ~ the largest ~ down to a Half-Gill) were used by Customs & Excise to check that market traders were not under-selling their customers. The penalties for doing so were usually a heavy fine, or for persistent offenders, banishment to a penal colony in Australia!

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
