Important 18th Century Circa 1740 Hand Carved Italian Giltwood Tete a Tete Sofa

18th century
Description

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this very rare and important 18th century hand craved Italian circa 1740 Tete a Tete conversation settee

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price

What a find, I have never seen another and to be honest, I’m not sure one exists. It is circa 1740 as mentioned and finished with the original gilding, hand carved to the back rest with Lion’s heads and mains, the feet are lions hair paw, this piece visually is to die for

It is by modern standards very low to the ground so more of a bench or stool size, we can add Victorian porcelain castors for the cost price should the new owner wish to raise the height, it would add around 5cm. The upholstery looks to be late 19th century and in good period order

Condition wise were have removed the base cover and checked inside, some of the webbing has been restored and a new hessian base cover fitted. The gilding is nicely aged and original

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tete-a-tete sofa, also known as a vis-a-vis or conversation chair, is an S-shaped two-seater sofa designed in the 18th century to allow two occupants to converse face-to-face while seated side-by-side.

Carved hardwood frames were typically coated in gesso and decorated with gold leaf gilding, complemented by woven silk damask, brocade, or velvet upholstery.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery, natural wear or rubbing on raised carvings revealing clay bole underneath the gilded layer, and historical webbed structural frame construction.

Positioning a conversation seat in a central foyer, drawing room centre, or bay window creates a functional, sculptural focal point that connects classic and contemporary aesthetics.

Keep gilded frames away from direct sunlight and moisture, clean timber gently with a soft dry brush, and vacuum upholstery using a low-suction fabric attachment.
