18th Century English Oak Coffer

18th century
For Sale by Jorvik Antiques
Description

A fabulous early 18th century antique English carved oak coffer. This antique coffer has its original snipe hinges to the lid which opens to reveal a spacious interior. It has a panelled front and sides with decorative carved detail throughout. This is a beautiful example of a well constructed oak coffer.

DIMENSIONS:

Height – 25” Width – 56” Depth – 22”

In good antique condition throughout with some signs of age. There is surface wear in places including age-related marks, scratches and fading. There is evidence of historic woodworm, however this is now long gone and has been fully treated as a precaution. The antique oak coffer remains structurally solid and sound. Overall, a great example of its kind. We ask that you take the time to look at all the photos as they form part of the description and condition report of the item.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique oak coffer is a wooden storage chest featuring a hinged lid, historically used in European households from the medieval period through the 18th century to store linens, clothing, and household valuables.

18th century coffers were typically constructed using native oak timbers joined with mortise and tenon joints held together by wooden pegs, often featuring inset recessed panels and extended vertical stiles forming the feet.

Authentic period oak coffers demonstrate hand-hewn timber marks, irregular hand-turned pegging around the frame, original hand-forged iron hinges, and natural timber shrinkage or surface wear consistent with age.

Position the coffer at the foot of a bed for linen storage, place it in an entrance hall as a bench, or utilise it in a living space as a low coffee table paired with modern upholstery.

Preserve the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice yearly, while keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and extreme damp.
