Antique Clock Dresser

18th century
Description

This exquisite Antique French Clock Dresser is a true testament to craftsmanship and artistry. Meticulously crafted from a combination of oak and burr elm panels, this dresser showcases the skillful use of secondary inlay and stringing made from fruitwood, boxwood, and ebony. The impeccable cabinet work and intricate hand carving exemplify the exceptional quality of this piece. Originating from the Bresse region of Mid-Western France, the dresser embodies the characteristic style and choice of materials from that area.

One notable feature is the charming naive drawing of a cockerel etched in the reserve on the clock door. This addition is believed to have been made after the revolution in 1789, symbolizing the National Emblem of France, the Gallic Rooster, which adorned French flags during that time. The significance of this symbol lies in its play on words, with "gallus" meaning both Gaul and rooster in Latin, making it a meaningful representation of the French people.

The clock mechanism has recently undergone a comprehensive overhaul, ensuring its optimal functioning. Our dedicated clock restorer confirms that all the works are original and from the period, including the fascinating 'Chain' pendulum. Not only does the clock keep accurate time, but it also strikes to provide a fully functional and immersive experience.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A vaisselier horloge is a traditional regional European furniture piece, predominantly originating from French provinces, that combines a central longcase clock with flanked plate racks and a lower storage buffet.

These pieces are typically crafted from regional hardwoods such as solid oak, chestnut, or fruitwood, often featuring decorative burr wood veneers, brass movement components, and hand-cast iron fittings.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-joined cabinetry such as mortise and tenon construction, hand-carved decorative motifs, original movement cut-outs, and natural age-related patination on timber surfaces and clock dials.

To integrate a substantial clock dresser into contemporary schemes, pair it with neutral wall palettes, clean-lined ceramics on the open shelves, and minimal decorative accents to let the timber craftsmanship remain the focal point.

Maintain the wood finish by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain annually, while keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
