Antique English Victorian Papier-mâché Tea Caddy

19th century
Description

A really lovely Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Papier-mâché two compartment Tea Caddy of rectangular form. Offered here in good period condition, this fine old caddy stands upon four bracket feet and retains it's two original inner lids, silver lining paper and overall painted arabesque decoration heightened with gilding. Minor paint losses to the feet, but unusually supplied with a key which, whilst believed to be an old replacement, does in fact turn the wards of the lock.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, papier-mache tea caddies were decorative containers designed to store dry tea leaves, decorated with hand-painted gilding, mother-of-pearl, and floral arabesques.

These pieces were crafted by pressing layers of paper treated with adhesive into moulds, which were then heat-baked, varnished repeatedly with dark lacquer, polished, and finished with painted gilding or shell inlays.

Authentic 19th-century papier-mache displays fine crazing in the clear varnish coats, genuine shell or hand-gilded decoration, and a solid, surprisingly heavy weight resulting from multiple layers of baked lacquer.

Display the tea caddy on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table alongside modern ceramics or minimal artwork to add depth and historical character to modern decor.

Position the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the lacquer from cracking, and clean lightly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth without using liquid cleaners.
