19th Century Welsh Folk art Column Form

Really quite extraordinary piece of Welsh folk art, "The Marquess of Angleseys Column" dating mid to late 19th Century. Constructed from carved pieces of slate from North Wales. Made from the Welsh slate miners as ornaments and gifts. We have never seen the like and probably never will again. A real museum piece of sculpture folk art.

Completely solid in structure and form, Natural aging across all surfaces. An old object that has stood the test of time, please expect this in the condition of this item.

Originating in the nineteenth century, Welsh slate carving was a traditional regional craft practised by quarrymen in North Wales. Workers carved local slate into decorative items, miniature architectural models, and household objects using hand tools during non-working hours.

These models were crafted primarily from natural dark grey slate quarried in Wales, hand-cut, shaped, and incised using chisels and hand tools. Small metal components, such as wire, were occasionally integrated to create intricate railings or fixtures.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible hand-carving marks, geometric incised decoration, and stepped or layered construction. Age is further indicated by natural surface wear, minor edge flaking, and a smooth patina consistent with historical handling.
