Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 18th-century Italian pediment is an architectural feature originally placed above doorways, mirrors, or large furniture to serve as a crowning decorative element. During this period, Italian craftsmen frequently executed these pieces in carved wood finished with silver or gold leaf gilding, incorporating elaborate Rococo and Baroque scrollwork.

These architectural elements were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or poplar, coated with layers of gesso (a mixture of glue binder and chalk), and then layered with silver leaf. A protective varnish or lacquer was often applied over the leaf to prevent rapid oxidisation.

Authentic period silver gilding usually displays signs of age, such as natural tarnishing, subtle flaking of the gesso substrate, and gentle wear along raised edges exposing underlying wood or bole preparation layers.

An architectural pediment can be mounted directly onto a wall above a doorway, bedhead, or mirror frame to create a striking focal point. It can also be displayed on a shelf or mantelpiece as a standalone decorative sculpture.

Clean silver leaf wood using only a dry, soft feather duster or soft-bristled brush to remove surface dust. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, or abrasive polishes, as these will dissolve the historic gesso layer and strip the delicate metal leafing.
