Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 1920s and 1930s, an Art Deco tallboy is a vertical storage piece combining a chest of drawers with an upper cupboard section. The style is characterised by clean geometric lines, streamlined contours, and rich wood veneers such as burr walnut.

Cabinetmakers of this era predominantly used solid timber frames overlaid with decorative veneers, such as figured or burr walnut, arranged in bookmatched patterns. Hardware typically features streamlined handles crafted from metal, Bakelite, or chrome.

Authentic 1930s pieces showcase characteristic features such as dark plinth bases, rounded top corners, symmetrical bookmatched veneer patterns, and period-correct metal handles. Internal drawer construction often displays hand-cut dovetail joints.

A tallboy functions effectively as a focal piece in a contemporary bedroom, dressing room, or hallway. Pair the rich wood grain with neutral wall palettes, geometric brass accents, or muted textiles to create a balanced aesthetic.

To preserve the original veneer, keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and damp environments. Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding silicone sprays.
