George III Oval-back Armchair

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: William Carr Antiques

A stunning George III oval-back armchair, pierced back splat with superb carved patera to the centre, raised on square tapered forelegs. C1780.

Attributed to the Hepplewhite School, a rare Hepplewhite oval-back chair displays very similar features such as the unusual small toe at the end of the forelegs, outsweeping rear legs at the bottom, cabriole style arms and small carved additions to the bottom of the oval backrest. (See page 336 image 1 of Herbert Cescinsky’s English Furniture 1968)

Parts of original label and stamped initials to underneath of the seat rail. Recently traditionally upholstered to a high standard in an endearing honey bee material, the frame is very tight and structurally excellent.
