Retaining original mount and frame. The image is in very good original and unrestored condition, the reeded ebonised frame original also with minor knocks and marks.
Cecil Aldin was born in Slough, Berkshire in 1870. His father was a keen amateur artist and Cecil began to draw at a young age and studied under Albert Moore in London and studied animal anatomy at the National Art Training School, later attending the school of William Frank Calderton in Sussex.
He rented a studio in Chelsea in 1892 and his drawings of animals at London Zoo, of his own dogs and of dog shows were published. He began a long association with The Illustrated London News and he illustrated the stories from Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Second Jungle Book’ for the Pall Mall Budget in 1894.
He joined Chelsea Arts Club and held his first exhibition in Paris in 1908, and again in 1909 receiving great acclaim and extending his fame to a wider audience. In 1910 he became Master of the South Berkshire Hunt and was associated with other local hunts. He continued to illustrate magazines and books including Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers. He also published his own collections of illustrations of dogs and also a series of nursery pictures following the birth of his son and daughter.
His son, Dudley, was killed in 1917 in the 1st World war and this deeply affected the rest of his life and influenced his paintings.
His painting ‘A Land Girl Ploughing’ which depicts a lone land girl guiding two large horses is considered amongst the most iconic images of the work of the Women’s Land army during WWI.
In 1930 Cecil Aldin moved to the Balearic islands hoping the warmer climate would ease his arthritis. On returning to England for a visit in 1935 he suffered a heart attack on the boat and was rushed to London clinic when the ship docked but he could not be saved.
