Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the late 19th century, novelty mechanical desk bells were used in private residences, hotels, and shops to summon staff or clerks. Manufacturers created whimsical animal-shaped casings, such as pigs, turtles, and dogs, concealing internal chime mechanisms activated by pressing or twisting parts like tails or snouts.

These functional objects were primarily cast from heavy metals such as iron, brass, or bronze, often finished with nickel plating or silver wash. Internal clockwork springs and steel gongs provided the audible strike mechanism.

Authentic pieces feature heavy cast metal construction with age-appropriate surface patination, oxidation, and wear to the high points of the relief details. The mechanical movementtypically operated by twisting the tail or pushing a levershould be integrated directly into the body casting.

An animal-form service bell functions as a distinctive sculptural accent on a home office desk, study bookshelf, or mantelpiece. Its metallic finish complements both traditional dark wood interiors and contemporary minimalist spaces.

Dust the exterior regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid applying harsh liquid abrasives or chemical cleaners that strip the historical patina, and apply light clock oil sparingly to the internal spring mechanism to maintain functionality.
