M Lees and Sons has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
The drawer fitted with decorative gilded handles, the whole decorated with pierced and engraved brass-work , heavy dome-topped studs and a pierced escutcheon plate with original lock and key . Heavily-moulded profiles to the edge of the lid and top of base section.

The interior or the lid showing decorative brass hinges , the interior void having a lidded candle or spice-box to right hand side. Each side fitted with substantial cast gilt-bronze carrying handles .

Such chests were often commissioned by officers of the Dutch East India Trading Company or VOC , as prestigious items for personal use when travelling and working in the colonies.
In excellent original condition, with wear consistent with age , use and purpose.
