19th Century Burmese Painted Teak Village Table

19th century
Description

19th century burmese painted teak village table circa 1890.

Rare table from myanmar (formerly burma) .  this table was from a village where the elders would gather round to discuss local issues.  hand painted on the side, which roughly translates as 'heron water pot  sheng khu tashi - cooperative association'

Teak top which traces of the original paint, opens out with the leaves pull out barers to make an 8 foot long table and with a 22 1/4" knee height, provides adequate space to function as a dining table, either in the kitchen or entertainment room.

Base has retained it's paint better, which forms a perfect back drop for the elegant burmese hand painted text.  originally this text has evidence of being on both sides, but has been rubbed off on the reverse.  standing on 4 substantial round straight legs.

Expected surface marks, minor non structurally comprising age splits, fading and losses to paint work.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in rural Myanmar during the nineteenth century, these tables were constructed for daily utilitarian use in homes, monasteries, or communal spaces. They feature local teak timber, minimal ornamentation, and occasionally hand-painted Burmese inscriptions denoting ownership or function.

Burmese furniture from this era was predominantly crafted from solid teak, prized for its natural oils, durability, and resistance to pests. Joinery relies on traditional mortise and tenon construction, occasionally finished with localized pigments or hand-painted vernacular script.

Authentic pieces feature dense, aged teak showing genuine weathering, hand-planed surfaces, and traditional joinery without modern steel fasteners. Hand-painted Burmese calligraphy, historic painted friezes, and uneven patination from long-term use further indicate original period origin.

Position a long teak table as a statement dining piece or a deep console in a hallway or open-plan room. Pair its rustic, patinated wood with minimalist contemporary seating or neutral linen upholstery to balance the historical character and painted details.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that could strip the original painted inscriptions. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity changes to prevent the teak from checking or warping.
