Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A yoke-back scholar chair, also known as an officials hat chair, is a traditional Chinese seating form featuring a distinctive curved top rail with protruding ends resembling a wooden yoke. Originating in the Ming and Qing dynasties, these chairs were traditionally associated with scholars, officials, and individuals of high status.

Traditional Chinese seating was constructed from regional timbers such as elm, cypress, and walnut, as well as dense hardwoods. The furniture relies on precise mortise-and-tenon joinery without the use of metal nails or adhesive, allowing the timber structure to adapt to changing humidity levels.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display hand-cut joinery, hand-carved relief details, and natural wear patterns on footrests, seat frames, and armrests. The underside often retains hand-planed surfaces, historical construction marks, and age-consistent patination within carved crevices.

These chairs serve as architectural accent pieces when positioned as a pair in an entrance hall, flanking a side table, or integrated into a modern living room layout. Their graphic silhouette and warm wood grain provide structural contrast alongside soft upholstered furniture.

Position the timber away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent wood shrinkage and joint movement. Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the timber and protect the surface finish.
