In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
It is full of history and there are some original taper burn marks on the back panels. These ritual protection marks with their distinctive tear-drop shape were believed to protect the household against fire.
The settle is in good condition and displays well. There are of course signs of age and use, small knocks and marks, wear and minor old splits but nothing detrimental. There are signs of historic worm which has all been treated as a precaution and hasn't affected the piece structurally or aesthetically. There have also been some historic repairs and restorations but the whole piece is strong and sturdy and ready for use.
