A fine antique writing table by Soubrier.

We bring to you this marvellous 19th century French writing table believed to be made around C1890 by the maker Soubrier, who are still in business to this day.

This original table features its original brown blind tooled desktop leather which is framed by Kingwood parquetry veneer, complete with a cross banded edge. The table features a finely crafted dovetailed Oak lined drawer complete with its original brass dropper handles and brass double action lock with its original key and brass escutcheon. Inside the drawer are dowel drawer stoppers and the badge of ‘Soubrier Ameublement 14, Rue de Reuilly Paris’.

To all sides of the table are Ebony inlays to the underside edge and above the legs in a diamond shape. With ebony stringings the square tapering legs start from an ebony band and descend to their original brass cup feet.

This fantastic table features its beautiful original rich colour and original French polished finish.

This very useful writing table is ideal to be used as a sofa table, lamp table, in a hallway or as a desk as it has the perfect proportions. Laptops or tablets could even be stored inside of the drawers and locked closed.

Its really a beautiful collectors piece and a very desirable rare find in this original condition.

We have just sympathetically restored, cleaned and waxed this table to give a natural shine and enhance the surface.

A brief history of Soubrier

Located in the heart of the Faubourg Saint Antoine, Maison Soubrier has been owned by the same family for over two hundred years. The firm originally produced period furniture, before moving into antique dealing. Louis Soubrier, the current owner, spent years visiting auction houses to indulge his passion for historic furnishings and beautiful objects, which he then sold to a few fortunate clients.

A furnishing and decorating company, it was renowned for both for its furniture and for its proposals for elegantly presented layouts in its rows of bedrooms, living rooms, boudoirs or dining rooms at 14 rue de Reuilly. Made-to-measure furniture made according to old models or according to the taste of the day for prestigious interiors such as those of the Ritz.

This item is in superb condition for its age as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches, dents and old repairs. However, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm and character.
