Italian Renaissance Bambocci Walnut Commode

17th century
For Sale by Baggott & Co.
Description

Italian Renaissance Bambocci Walnut Commode

Highly carved walnut figure head drawer handles on burr walnut drawers, mounted on two short and three long drawers with highly carved borders, each stile carved with roaring masks above typical Bambocci figures. The top with carved front and sides, the panelled ends of the chest are further carved, the whole set upon a carved ogee plinth, stands on bun feet.

Northern Italy, Genoa or Florence, circa 1600

These Renaissance carved Bambocci figures celebrate life and nature and were designs favoured in both Florence and Genoa into the 17th century.

Similar examples of this commode, or chest, were illustrated in a catalogue including the collection of the 'Vincigliata Palace' in Florence. 'Italian Furniture and Interiors' by George Layland Hunter, London, Batsford, plates 153 & 164.

Condition: The carved figures are all well preserved with the rich colour showing through, the burr walnut drawer fronts with a rich hue, some signs of small alterations over 400 years but on the whole very original, the drawers, which are of slab construction are lined with hand made decorated pink paper, the drawers all open smoothly, the feet front and back are later.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bambocci furniture originates from Northern Italy and is characterized by carved small human figures, cupids, or cherubs, known as bambocci, integrated into the pilasters, handles, and drawer fronts of dark hardwood case pieces.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid walnut or fruitwoods, featuring hand-carved decorative relief moulding, dovetail joinery, carved figural handles, and turned bun feet.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-hewn secondary woods, irregular dovetail joints, historic dark patina on the walnut surfaces, and hand-carved detailing rather than machine-moulded ornament.

A heavily carved commode serves as a striking contrast piece in minimalist or contemporary settings, anchored by clean-lined art above or balanced with neutral, textured textiles.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
