ANTIQUE #SA939991

An Aesthetic Movement Walnut Sarcopagus-shaped Coal Box Or Cellaret By Holland & Sons Or Similar, 1880s.

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Jeckyll & Co

Sophisticated design and finely finished detailing, brass internal hinges stamped Cope, caps and castors also by Cope and Collinson.

The design of the brass plaque recalls the sconces Thomas Jeckyll designed and patented for Robbins & Co. in 1875. This is not by his hand but is well conceived and presented within moulded walnut lozenge frame, incised gilt lines and cross-banded border.

It has had use, the top of the lid is faded in places and there is the odd dent and scratch, but it carries these blemishes with aplomb. As a cellaret it would hold a case plus of wine.
