Description

The indigo-blue field of this beautiful salt-bag contains a myriad of small totemic crosses, symbolising the quincunx in each case or stylised '5s, symbolising protection. Woven by Afshar nomads circa 1900, this namakdan is in very good original condition and what is particularly attractive, is the main border around the central field of the lower bag, diagonal bands of natural ivory and madder-red, a border design often found in the knotted-pile rugs of the Sirjan Afshars.

The back of the namakdan is in simple plain-weave technique with the use of an unusual natural burnt-orange colour, covered in tiny crosses - again symbolising protection.
