Victorian Army and Navy Campaign chest

This Victorian teak campaign chest was made circa 1870.

When first commissioned a British officer would make his way to the Army & Navy flagship store in Victoria Street. There he would purchase the items he would require for his tours of duty around India and other locations of the British Empire.

Made in 2 parts to enable these to be put into special packing cases before being shipped to a foreign land on a sailing ship. Once in the foreign land it would then be loaded onto carts and wagons to go to its destination, including the Northwest frontier and other hotspots.

It has a pair of half width drawers at the top, a deep drawer below in the top section. The base section has a further 2 graduated drawers and stands on the original turned feet.

All are fitted the flush brass inset handles, it also has brass corners and straps to provide protection against the many knocks it was likely to endure during its carriage.
