Description

Pair of early C19th Regency period ‘Old Sheffield Plate ‘ campana-shaped wine-coolers.

Fine pair of wine or champagne coolers of campana form , decorated with a crisply cast band of oak leaves and acorns to the bodies . The edges of the top cast with intricate floral decoration, the sides with shaped wrythen handles .

The fronts of each with an inlaid silver cartouche engraved with intertwined initials. Constructed in the traditional manner with detachable inner rims and liners .

The original silver plate in excellent condition, with minor ‘bleeding’ through to the copper commensurate with age and use .

* ‘Old Sheffield Plate’ was a technique developed and perfected in Sheffield during the mid C18th when a material was created by fusing thin sheets of silver sandwiching a copper body , enabling goods to be cast and produced much more cheaply than using solid silver .
