Channel Island Longcase Clock – Edward Renouf – Jersey

18th century
Description

Channel Island Longcase Clock by Edward Renouf of Jersey

A very pretty 12” arched dial 8-day longcase clock. The unusual painted dial is decorated with floral swags to the arch that runs down into the top corners and further floral corners to the lower half of the dial and is made by Byrne of Birmingham. The conventional weight-driven movement strikes the hours on a bell.

The mahogany case is very fine and well-proportioned and features boxwood stringing to the trunk and hood door, boxwood chequering to the hood moulding and base panel, and decorative bone or ivory inlays to the trunk door. Channel island clock making had close links to Dorset and the cases represent those made on the south coast of England at the time, but it’s believed the cases were made in the islands, and the unique decoration on this case seems to back that theory up.

Serviced and guaranteed for 3 years.

Height: 81 ¾? or 207.5cm

CIRCA. 1785/90

Provenance: Private collection - U.K.

Channel Island longcase clocks feature mahogany cases influenced by both English and French regional horological traditions. Popularised during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, these tall clocks frequently feature maker inscriptions from Jersey or Guernsey along with painted arched dials.

Longcase clock cases were predominantly constructed using solid timber and mahogany veneers, often incorporating decorative satinwood stringing or boxwood inlays. The interior movements were fabricated from brass clockwork components, suspended iron weights, and hand-painted metal dials.

Authentic period longcase clocks display hand-jointed cabinet construction, original iron weight and pendulum suspension assemblies, natural surface patina, and regional maker signatures matching historical clockmaker registries.

Position a longcase clock as a vertical architectural focal point in an entry hallway, dining space, or stair landing. Contrast the warm mahogany wood tones against neutral painted walls to highlight the items tall silhouette.

Keep the clock case in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement and veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, apply beeswax sparingly, and have the mechanical movement serviced every three to five years by a qualified horologist.
