Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Canterbury stand was originally commissioned to store sheet music near a piano. Named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who reportedly ordered the first example, these low, divided wooden racks quickly evolved to hold newspapers, magazines, and folios in elegant reception rooms.

Regency Canterburys were predominantly crafted from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. Construction featured hand-cut dovetail joints on lower drawers, delicate turned or carved dividers, and short turned legs equipped with brass cup castors for easy mobility.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct joinery, including hand-sawn drawer linings and original brass hardware. Look for natural patination in the timber, hand-carved scrollwork or slatted partitions, and operational brass castors fixed with original steel screws.

In modern interiors, a Canterbury stand functions as an architectural side accent beside a sofa or armchair. It provides organized storage for art books, magazines, or tablet devices while bringing rich wood tones into minimalist or eclectic living spaces.

Maintain the surface by regularly dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting, and lubricate brass castors sparingly if required.
