Antique Bread Sofreh, Kamo, Central Persia.

1900 - 1920
Description

Bread sofrehs were specifically used for kneading and rolling the dough in order to prepare for baking over a hot plate and producing the delicious flat-bread or 'lavash' in Persian.

Kamo, a village in central Persia, produced quite a number of bread sofrehs and a book, specifically dedicated to the bread sofrehs of Kamo, was produced by the well-known Persian tribal weavings specialist, Parviz Tanavoli in 1998. According to Tanavoli, the sofrehs of Kamo were unknown until a number of them appeared in the Tehran bazaar in 1998! Tanavoli purchased them all and this was the start of his research into the Kamo sofrehs and subsequently, his publication later that year.

This stunning sofreh is an early example, possibly from circa 1900, and is woven on a cotton structure with highlights of cotton but being mainly woven in wool. All the colours are from natural dyed wool.

I love these weavings with their simplistic, minimalistic designs - truly nomadic woven art!
