The Brynmawr furniture workshop was set up in 1929 as part of a Quaker led experiment to bring employment to the town of Brynmawr in South Wales whose industry had been devastated by the Great Depression. Under the direction of the designer Paul Matt Brynmawr produced a range of good quality furniture with solid oak frames and laminated panels in a modernist Quaker style with little ornament which could be made by the newly trained workers. Matt left the company in 1936 and production ceased shortly after the outbreak of war.
