Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1870s.
It retains its original English chronometer-style lever platform escapement, also of large size, whilst the “Corniche” case is of excellent quality, retaining its original polished finish and with thick bevelled glass panels to all sides. The white enamel dial (perfect condition) is signed by the maker: Leach & Sons of Mark Lane, London. Precision timekeeping and guaranteed for at least two years. 20.5cms high (handle up) 10.5cms wide ~ much larger than conventional carriage clocks. c1865.
Charles Leach worked in Mark Lane, London 1867-1871 before moving to Commercial Road East in 1871. Renown as a clock and watchmaker (and jeweller). See Britten’s “Old Clock & Watches and their Makers” 1986 edition page 516.
