Description

A splendid C19th Indian carved ebony open arm library chair; finely carved in solid ebony. Galle District, Ceylon. The shaped crest rail finely carved with a large central scallop shell flanked by scrolling foliage; above the shaped caned back with a reeded frame having long scrolled arms terminating with carved interlaced thistles and leaves. Raised on flared tassel and cup arm supports with finely carved lotus petals. The cane seat with a reeded frame and a leaf carved front rail with carved large flower head corners. Raised on turned tapering legs carved with elongated lotus leaves; terminating in the original brass cup castors. The square tapering rear legs giving the seat a slight incline for comfort. The seat and back with feather cushions.

An almost identical documented chair is illustrated in A Jaffer, "Furniture from British Indian and Ceylon: A catalogue of the Collection in Victoria and Albert Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum, 2001 page 378"
