Victorian Arts & Crafts Brass Double Bed by Hoskins & Sewell

19th century
Description

An elegant antique Victorian Arts and Crafts brass double bed by Hoskins & Sewell of Birmingham dating from circa 1890. Founded in 1850, Hoskins and Sewell were one of the 19th centuries most renowned brass bed makers, who provided beds for the titanic. This is a good quality all brass bed, a simple but elegant design with dipped top rails and square vertical rails with flat finials. Each corner is stamped with the Hoskins & Sewell logo. To the base rails it has text denoting that “this bedstead has been finished with the Varnoid Process”. Interestingly, this process was used to limit corrosion of brass especially on beds which were to be used aboard ships – so this bed could well have been on a ship originally. It features a headboard, footboard and two side irons. Does not come with a mattress or bed base. It is in original tarnished finish, with some oxidisation and discolouration to the brass.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
