Antique Furniture Direct has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
This is a good quality all brass bed, a simple but elegant design with dipped top rails and square vertical rails with flat finials. Each corner is stamped with the Hoskins & Sewell logo. To the base rails it has text denoting that “this bedstead has been finished with the Varnoid Process”. Interestingly, this process was used to limit corrosion of brass especially on beds which were to be used aboard ships – so this bed could well have been on a ship originally. It features a headboard, footboard and two side irons. Does not come with a mattress or bed base. It is in original tarnished finish, with some oxidisation and discolouration to the brass.
