Gents 1960s Sekonda Strela 3017 Cosmonaut Chronograph Wrist Watch

1940 - 1960
Description

Gents 1960s Sekonda Strela 3017 Cosmonaut chronograph / wrist watch.

The watch has a 19-jewel Poljot 3017 hand-winding movement which is working nicely. Sekonda and Poljot are the same company but Sekonda was the brand name used for the British market.

In 1959 the Strela 3017 watch was put into production. To enable this, the Soviet government purchased the tooling which was previously used to produce the Swiss Venus 150 chronograph movement. The Strela was a wrist chronograph with a stopwatch function and a 45-minute counter of minutes. For the first few years, the watch was exclusively designed and produced for the officers of the Air Force and the watches had to meet strict military specifications. Cosmonauts Pavel Be-liaev and Aleksej Leonov also used these watches when they became the first in the world to enter into the open space.

In 1965, the decision was taken to make the watches available to the general public.

This particular watch measures 36mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the buttons. The case is a combination of stainless steel and plated. It is in good condition with just light surface marking, nothing serious at all.

The lens is in good condition.

The dial is in its original finish with original hands (there is light surface corrosion to the hands), two subsidiary dials (one for constant seconds and one to record up to 45 minutes), a telemeter, a tachymetre and outer minute markers.

The chronograph feature is operated by pressing the top button to start and stop, and the bottom button to re-set to zero. Both the chronograph hand and the subsidiary dial hand re-set just a fraction to the right of zero. The chronograph feature should not be kept running constantly.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
