Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1890s.
I say more often, these locking decanters are very rarely seen these days.

The solid brass lock has a mechanism (signed Betjemann's Patent) that when locked doesn't allow the stopper to be removed. Once unlocked the mechanism moves out to allow the stopper to then be removed, another form of a tantalus, to keep the Butler and other household staff away from the expensive liquor within.

This one remains in superb condition, with a tiny chip to the back corner, mentioned purely for accuracy; insignificant, it can't even be seen due to the heavy decoration, otherwise minor fleabites. The base measures 4" x 4" and stands 9 1/2" tall.
