19th Century Rosewood Cased 54-Hour Marine Chronometer, by John Campbell, Liverpool

Description

A good English brass 2-day (54 hour) Marine Chronometer in a 3-tier Brazilian Rosewood case, made by John Campbell, (late of Norris and Campbell), Liverpool and numbered 644 on the dial.

It has a 3.5-inch silvered dial with solid gold spade-hands. There is a subsidiary second’s dial and a 54-hour up/down dial, each with black metal hands. The fusee movement has an Earnshaw-type escapement, compensated cup balance, and is supported in a gimballed brass bowl with sprung winding-shutter. The key is mounted towards the rear of the 3-tier Brazilian Rosewood case, bound in brass with brass carry handles. The glass in both lids is intact and the movement is in full working order.

Thomas Campbell is recorded as having left the Norris & Campbell Partnership in 1857 which means this Chronometer was most likely made between 1857-1860.
