A superb pair of 19th century giltwood armchairs with the highly desirable and rare camel shaped back which makes the chairs more comfortable than those with a show frame with generous seats. They are carved in limewood and retain the original gilt which is delightfully rubbed in the areas you would expect with the natural bole and gesso showing through. Water gilded in 24 ct gold leaf and not oil gilded. We have just collected these from our upholsterers where they have been completely resprung and upholstered in a natural linen fabric with double piping detail. The serpentine front shaped seats with everted carved arms with acanthus details and the whole raised on cabriole shaped legs and united by serpentine shaped stretchers. Very comfortable. 19th century. fabulous condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gainsborough and salon armchairs are wide, open-sided seating designs featuring padded backrests, exposed carved timber frames, and upholstered arm pads, originating in 18th-century European interior design.

These chairs typically feature hand-carved hardwood frames finished with gold leaf gesso gilding, fitted with woven textile upholstery, natural fill padding, and curved cabriole legs.

Look for signs of age-appropriate wear to the gold leaf coating revealing red or grey clay gesso underneath, hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, and Period-accurate frame carving details.

Position them as statement accent pieces alongside neutral upholstery, minimalist backdrop walls, or traditional timber panelling to create refined visual contrast in drawing rooms or foyers.

Dust the gilding gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or chemical polishers which can strip or damage delicate gold leaf and underlying gesso layers.
