Twin Fusee Bracket Clock by Barraud and Lund

19th century
For Sale by Chalfont Clocks
Description

A striking drum head bracket clock by Barraud and Lund of exceptional quality. The case is made of quarter sawn mahogany with a beautifully crisp silvered and engraved roman dial with blued steel hands. The eight day twin fusee movement striking on a gong with pendulum lock is of excellent quality signed and numbered 1974 to match the dial.

Manufactured between 1849 and 1869 the company of Barraud and Lund was start in 1795 by Paul Phillip Baraud, when Richard Lund became a partner in 1838 the Lund was added to the company. The name changes of the company are useful markers for dating their work, and this clock falls into the 20 year period when the surnames were both singular.

Barraud and Lund were noted London makers, celebrated for the their high quality chronometers, regulators, pocket watches and clocks, they finally ceased trading in 1929.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A twin fusee bracket clock is a traditional 19th-century English timepiece featuring a cone-shaped pulley system designed to maintain constant spring tension, with one fusee driving the timekeeping and the second powering the chime or strike mechanism.

These timepieces were typically constructed with mahogany, rosewood, or walnut cases, featuring cast brass bezels, glass aperture panels, and hand-painted or enamelled metal dials.

Authentic examples feature heavy brass plates secured by screwed pillars, wire or gut lines wound around spiralled fusee cones, hand-cut brass gearing, and historical maker signatures on the dial or backplate.

Placing a mahogany bracket clock on a marble mantelpiece, dark wood sideboard, or structured bookshelf provides a grounding historical accent that contrasts with contemporary interior finishes.

Maintain the item in an environment with stable humidity and temperature, wind the mechanism regularly using the correct key, and arrange professional horological servicing every five to seven years.
