Edwardian Mahogany & Inlaid Musical Long Case Clock

A fine Edwardian (Circa 1905) mahogany and inlaid musical long case clock. The superb quality face having a wonderful face with pierced and gilded spandrels. The silvered dial having raised gilded Arabic numerals with 3 subsidiary dials, the seconds dial in the centre the 2 other dials to the corners and offering Chime or Silent and St.Michael, Whittington or Westminster Chimes. The 3 train 8 day movement with polished brass weights and brass pendulum. The tunes are played on 8 tubular gongs and the hour is struck on a longer gong. The movement has been totally serviced and polished to a very high standard. The mahogany hood having a moulded cornice above a dentil and tear drop carved frieze leading to the cross banded and glazed door with canted corners. The sides with fretted and silk backed sound boards. The trunk having a boxwood inlaid frieze above the quartered mahogany door with well carved blind fret surround. The base having conforming quartered mahogany panel with cross banding and further boxwood inlay. The clock stands on splayed bracket feet with blind fret detail. HISTORY NOTE..Thomas Armstrong was the eldest son of Joseph Armstrong a Watchmaker in Manchester. Thomas was a jeweller and silversmith born in January 1829, his shop was located in Deansgate Manchester. His partnership with his brother, George Booth Armstrong began about 1858, taking on the business started by their father Joseph.
