Rare George 111 Tortoiseshell and Mother-of-pearl Inlaid Double Sided Purse C.1800

18th century
Description

An unusual George 111 tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl inlaid double sided purse with applied gilt tooled leather and double steel chain handles. The purse would probably have been for some coins and documents. It is in really good condition considering its daily use and age. The tortoiseshell is very decorative with a central flower motif and sprays of small leaves in mother-of-pearl. There is a steel closure to both sides, one side shuts well and one side doesn't close properly. It has two chains for handles. The leather is dark red with gold tooling. It has of course age relate wear but relatively it is in good condition. A most unusual piece.
