Description

A stunning antique English silver plated cocktail or drinks tray made by the top-notch London silversmith "Goldsmiths' and Silversmiths' Company at 112 Regent Street, London; signed on the understand.

This stylish tray stands on four attractive feet and is decorated with a beautiful engraved design.

Just back from our silversmith's workshop where it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory.

Dating to c.1920, it remains in superb condition measuring 14" x 9 1/2" x 1/2".

In 1880 William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman acquired premises at 112, Regent Street, London and founded The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company. The firm produced a wide range of items from solid silver tableware and cutlery, jewellery and watches to electroplaters, trophies and surgical instruments. In 1898 the expanded and well-known firm became a limited company and added "Ltd" to its name.

The abundant advertising activity of The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd left numerous illustrations of their products. The company also became a distinguished dealer in diamonds and precious stones and a popular retailer of items by other silversmiths such as Harrison Brothers & Howson, William Comyns, Martin Hall & Co Ltd, W&G Sissons, among others.

The company's artworks received acclaim at a number of international exhibitions from the 1880s through to the early 1900s. Thus the magnificent Rococo silver tea and coffee set, excellent diamond jewellery and Art Nouveau silver toilet set truly impressed the observer at the Paris Exhibition in 1900:

"The exhibit by the Goldsmiths’ and Silversmiths’ Company is of enormous intrinsic value. Its artistic value is great. Given these two attributes, and it is not surprising that the display interests vast numbers of people every day at the Exhibition. The Company fully deserves the success it has achieved"

(The Paris Exhibition, 1900. The Art Journal, London, 1901, p.188)

In 1952 Garrard Co merged with The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd and took over their premises in Regent Street.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Trays from the 1920s Art Deco era frequently feature geometric forms, such as octagonal or cut-corner outlines, accompanied by engine-turned or machine-engraved perimeter borders rather than heavy Victorian scrolling motifs.

Most early twentieth-century silver-plated trays utilized EPNS (electroplated nickel silver) or electroplated Britannia metal, providing a durable base alloy for the electroplating process.

Authentic pieces are identified by stamped makers marks or hallmarks on the underside, often indicating the manufacturer alongside electroplate grade indicators such as EPNS or EPBM.

A silver-plated tray serves as a functional foundation on a sideboard, drinks trolley, or coffee table to group spirit bottles, crystal glassware, or scented candles while protecting wood surfaces.

Clean silver plate using a soft cloth and specialized non-abrasive silver polish to prevent wearing down the electroplated layer, avoiding harsh chemical dip solutions or abrasive pads.
