Portrait of Nicolas De Neufville, Seigneur De Villeroy; After Francois Clouet.

19th century
Description

Oil on copper,17th/18th century, after the original of 1568 by Francois Clouet, now in the Louvre.

This is a fine version of Clouet's original, in a late 18th century frame and in excellent condition.

NICOLAS lV de NEUFVILLE, Seigneur de Villeroy (1543 – 12 November 1617) was a secretary of state under four kings of France: Charles IX, Henry III, Henry IV, and Louis XIII. The most distinguished of all sixteenth-century French secretaries, Villeroy rose to prominence during the French Wars of Religion, a period of almost insoluble difficulties for the French monarchy and government. Despite faithfully serving Henry III, Villeroy found himself sacked by him without explanation in 1588, along with all the king's ministers. He was reinstated by Henry IV in 1594 and became more important than ever before. He remained in office until his death in 1617 during the reign of Louis XIII.

FRANCOIS CLOUET (c. 1510 – 22 December 1572), son of Jean Clouet, was a French Renaissance miniaturist and painter, particularly known for his detailed portraits of the French ruling family. His work is remarkable for the elaborate finish of all the details, the extreme accuracy of the drawing, and the exquisite completeness of the whole portrait.

SIZE: 15.5 x 13.5 inches including the frame.
