The Waverley Novels is the title given to the long series of Scott''s novels released from 1814 to 1832 which takes its name from the first novel, Waverley. Volume I, containing Waverley, is missing from this set, The Pocket Edition, which originally contained 25 volumes. The works are published between 1873-1874 by Adam and Charles Black of Edinburgh and are all bound by Mudie in half morrocco with marbled boards, end papers and page edges. The gilt decorated spines are arranged as 6 compartments by 5 raised bands. The books are tightly bound and internally clean although there is some age toning to the borders. Externally shelf wear to edges and hinges, some marks and rubbing and some bumping to corners. Approximately half of the rear hinge of volume II is split from the top to the centre and the front hinge has also started to split form the top. Each volume is some 16.6cms tall, about 10.5cms deep and the combined shelf coverage of the 24 volumes is approximately 63.5cms.
