Finely Bound 1st Edition 2 Book Set Of Henry Barton Baker's The London Stage; Its History And Traditions From 1576-1888

Henry Barton Baker (1845-1906) was an English Author who, amongst other titles, wrote French ''Society from the Fronde to the Great Revolution'' and ''Our Old Actors''. This 1st edition set is complete in 2 volumes published by W H Allen of Pall Mall in 1889 and finely bound by Birdsalls of Northampton, one of the major bookbinding firms in Great Britain from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century.
 
Bound in red crushed half morocco with cloth covering to the boards. The spines are arranged as 6 gilt decorated compartments by 5 raised band, top page edges gilt and marbled end papers. Tissue guarded frontispiece to each volume showing Garrick''s Drury Lane and The Kembles'' Covent Garden, both from old engraving.
 
Externally both volumes are in fine condition, with light shelf wear only, save for some splitting to the hinge of the top board to volume I and a little evidence of cracking to the bottom part of the hinge to volume II. Both are intact and show no signs of cracking/splitting to the interior. Internally clean but showing some light age toning. Remnants of removed bookplate to the front paste-down of volume I and an unused bookplate placed over a previous owner''s bookplate to the front paste-down of volume II which also has the book plate for M H Goldberg to the rear paste down, albeit upside down. Height 19.4cms, depth 13.6cms and combined shelf coverage of 6cms. Total unpackaged weight 1.4kgs.
