FAQs

Chinese export porcelain refers to ceramic items manufactured in China specifically for export to Western markets from the 16th to the early 20th centuries. These pieces combined traditional Chinese motifs and production techniques with functional forms tailored to European and American tastes.

These plates were crafted from kaolin clay and petuntse, forming true hard-paste porcelain. Decorative elements were painted by hand using cobalt oxide before applying a clear glaze and firing the piece at high temperatures, resulting in the characteristic underglaze blue finish.

Authentic late 19th-century pieces often feature hand-painted underglaze cobalt decoration with slight variations in intensity, pinholes or glaze pops, and unglazed rim footings. Reticulated or pierced borders display precise hand-cut work that shows slight irregularities under close inspection.

Mounting the piece on a wall array or placing it on a display stand on a sideboard top adds historic character to contemporary spaces. Combining cobalt ceramics with neutral linen backgrounds or dark timber furniture creates balanced visual contrast.

Clean delicate pierced porcelain using a soft, dry brush or a gently damp microfibre cloth with lukewarm water and mild dish soap. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive sponges, and dishwashers, ensuring no moisture sits prolonged within the pierced cut-outs.
