Painting Sheep and Shepherd at the Barn by Anthonij 'Anton' Mauve 1838 - 1888

Sheep and shepherd at the barn in winter.

Anton Mauve was born in Zaandam, he was one of the foremost painters of the Hague School.

He received his training from animal painters such as P.F. van Oss, Wouterus Verschuur and P.J.C. Gabriel.

He settled in the Hague in 1871 and later he moved Laren were he painted the heathland with heads of woolly sheep

melting in to the silver grey tones of the landscape.

One of his favourite spot was an area of wasteland out side Laren, which later became known as Mauve Sands.
