Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed in 1849 by Nathaniel Cooke and endorsed by chess master Howard Staunton, the Staunton pattern became the standardized design for competition and domestic chess sets throughout the Victorian era and into the modern period.

Victorian chess pieces were predominantly turned and carved from boxwood, with the dark pieces either natural ebony or ebonised boxwood. Playing boards and folding boxes were typically constructed from mahogany, walnut, or rosewood with brass fixings.

Authentic period sets feature hand-turned bases, delicate hand-carved details on the knights, natural surface patination, and minor variations in piece weight. Hinged folding boxes often feature period brass hooks or simple lock mechanisms.

An antique wooden chess set can be displayed open on a coffee table, desk, or sideboard as an interactive accent. Pairing rich timber tones with modern brass or leather elements adds texture and historical context to contemporary spaces.

Dust the set regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the timber finish. Store the set away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent wood warping or cracking.
