Antique Georgian 17th Century Oak Carved Coffer Locking with Original Key

17th century
Description

17th Century Oak Coffer.

A primitive blanket chest from the early 1800's.

We bring to you an excellent original condition early Georgian C1800 blanket chest coffer. This charming chest is primitively made from solid Oak with handmade whittled dowel construction. It features its original working wrought iron lock with original key and brass keyhole escutcheon to the front. The chest opens revealing its chain lid stay and iron strap hinges which have at some point in its long life have been replaced. This chest is original with lots of patina and charm which shows it's history and usage but has had historic restoration previously and we suspsect that the carving has been added later (very common in Victorian times). We have just cleaned and waxed this chest to give it a lustrous natural sheen and preserve and protect the item for many more years to come.

The chest is very clean and does not have any signs of woodworm which is unusual with an item of this age and is ready for its new home for storing blankets or to be used as general mass storage.

Please note; This item is in very good condition for its age but will obviously have the odd slight blemishes and here and there, however, we feel that this adds to the charm and authenticity of the item with it being antique.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
