Scarce 4 Book French Text 1st Edition Set of Malvina by Sophie Rista-cottin Dated 1800

19th century
Description

SCARCE 4 BOOK FRENCH TEXT FIRST EDITION SET OF MALVINA BY SOPHIE RISTA-COTTIN

Madam Cottin (1770 - 1807) was a popular 19th Century author whose work was translated into several languages. This French text first edition was published in Paris in 1800 by Chez Maradan. A handsome and complete set bound in contemporary speckled leather with speckled page edges, gilt decoration to board edges and spine which has red and green title labels.

Provenance. Each volume contains the book plate including the family crest for Sir Edmund Antrobus whose family motto Dei Memor Gratus Amicis translates to Mindful of God.

The name is locational, Antrobus being a small township or village in Cheshire some 5 miles NW of Northwich. In the Domesday Book it is mentioned twice as Entrebus which suggests a Norman – French origin (entre bois) especially as there was an adjacent wood. The Antrobus Baronetcy is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom and was created 22 May 1815 for Edmund Antrobus, of Antrobus Hall, Antrobus, Cheshire.

Condition. The books are well presented. Internally the pages are age toned although this is only really pronounced to the page edges of the front and rear few pages where the colour of the leather has transferred over time. Externally there is some scuffing to the head and base of the spines, some general marks and light wear overall and some light rubbing to the corners.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 19th-century French bookbindings often feature full or half calfskin leather, detailed gilt tooling along the spine, contrasting leather title labels, and hand-marbled endpapers, reflecting Neoclassical aesthetic influences.

Bindings from this period typically utilised vegetable-tanned calfskin or sheepskin over paperboard covers, sewn with linen thread across cords, and embellished with gold leaf lettering and decorative tooling.

Authentic books from around 1800 display characteristic age patterns such as toning or foxing on handmade rag paper, period-appropriate typography, letterpress indentations, and gentle patination on the gilded leather spines.

Stacking leather volumes horizontally on a coffee table or arranging them vertically between decorative bookends on open shelving adds historic texture, warm leather tones, and visual depth to modern spaces.

Keep antique leather books away from direct sunlight and heat sources, store them upright in a climate-controlled environment with stable humidity, and handle them with clean, dry hands without pulling on the top of the spines.
