An 8 Volume Set Contained in 4 English Language Books - Collectanea, Topographia Et Genealogica

19th century
Description

This work is a miscellany of previously unpublished material related to genealogy collated by Sir Frederic Madden (1801-1873), Reverend Bulkeley Bandinel (1781-1861) and John Gough Nichols (1806-1873). This was a quarterly publication from 1834 and was published by subscription by John Bowyer Nichols and Son, printers to The Society of Antiquaries. The books are uniformly bound in contemporary polished calf over marbled paper covered boards, with the elaborately gilt decorated spines having two gilt lettered morocco title labels to the 2nd and 4th compartments. The books are some 24.5cms high, 16.5cms deep and they have a combined shelf coverage of approximately 22.5cms.

Provenance: The bookplate for John Edmund Dowdeswell is on the front pastedowns as is a small label for Pull Court Library and its shelf location and volume number within the library. Pull Court, Bushley, Worcestershire was built for the Reverend Canon E. C. Dowdeswell by Edward Blore between 1831-1839 and replaced an earlier mansion. The Dowdeswells had been prominent in local and national politics since the 18th century, with many serving as members of Parliament. The family sold the house in 1934 and it is currently a specialist school. Condition: Internally there is some age toning and the loosening of one leaf to Volume III. Externally there is rubbing to the extremities and some surface lost to the marbled paper.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

It is a British 19th-century periodical publication containing historical, topographical, and genealogical records, compiled to preserve family histories and local parish documents.

Books of this era were typically bound in calfskin or morocco leather over thick boards, adorned with gold leaf foil for gilt detailing, and finished with marbled paper edges.

Authentic period bindings show age-appropriate wear to the leather, hand-stamped gilt tooling on the spine, raised structural bands, and contemporary paste-down endpapers.

A set of leather volumes can be arranged vertically on styled shelving, stacked horizontally on a side table as a base for small objects, or placed inside a glazed display cabinet.

Keep volumes away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent leather drying and red rot, store them upright with adequate support, and clean gently with a dry, soft brush.
