Digby Antiques (Wiltshire) has dated this piece to the 1910s.
Chatelaines were made for various sporting activities.
The item is decorated with a “crocodile” finish is marked on the main section and the lid. Made to look like a quiver?
On the outside engraving reads “Backwell Archers” 1910.

Maker Lawrence Emanuel whose mark appears on chatelaines, Birmingham 1909.
Not sure what it was used for, but it did have grease inside which was cleaned out, (not by me). The inside is gilded and this can still be seen.
