Superb pair of large Japanese cloisonné vases c.1900. Baluster shaped vases standing 22½" tall. Beautiful decorative enamel work in a rich palette of colours featuring flowers, exotic birds and butterflies within fan shaped cartouches against a black ground with wirework swirls all overlaid with chrysanthemum flowers. The upper portion in rust red with cherry blossom flowers and scores of small round symbols. A true pair, note how the decoration is mirrored from one vase to the other. Very small chip to the shoulder of one vase, otherwise excellent original condition.
